Iodine is a shiny purple-black crystal, which can sublimate slowly. Gaseous iodine shows purple color and has a pungent odor. Iodine has a powerful bactericidal effect, killing bacterial spores, fungi, viruses and protozoa. Iodine mainly exerts its bactericidal effect in the form of molecules (I2), which is based on the principle of iodination and oxidation of the active groups of bacteriophage proteins and binding to the amino groups of the proteins to cause protein denaturation and inhibition of the metabolic enzyme system of the bacteriophage.
Iodine is the basic raw material for the production of inorganic and organic iodides, mainly used in the fields of medicine and health to manufacture various iodine preparations, disinfectants, deodorizers, analgesics, and detoxifiers for radioactive substances. It is a raw material for pesticide production and also a feed additive for livestock. Antibacterial agents used in industry for synthesizing dyes, smoke extinguishing agents, photographic emulsions, and cutting oil emulsions. Single crystal prisms used for manufacturing electronic instruments, polarizers for optical instruments, and glass that can transmit infrared radiation. Used for leather and specialty soap. Iodine is a good catalyst in the methylation, isomerization, and dehydrogenation reactions of organic synthesis reactions. It is also used as a separating agent for alkanes and alkenes. Used as a stabilizer for rosin, tall oil, and other wood products. It is also used as a refining agent for high-purity zirconium, titanium, hafnium, silicon, and germanium.
